from bicentennial book of Ramsey County-Devils Lake: Martin and Anna Ripplinger Volk wer German immigrants from Odessa, Russia. Shortly after theywere married, they came to america. They farmed first near Drake, North Dakota, then they farmed near Knox and later moved to the Belcher farm west of Devils Lake. All but three of their eleven children were born by this time. The oldest boy, Martin, was killed by aq run-away team of horses at the age of thirteen. Stanley lives at the Odd Fellows Home in Devils Lake. Frances (Mrs. Leonard Cleaver) lives in Seattle. Lena (Mrs. Carl Wolter) from Weblin, South Dakota, has four children: Carl, Myrna, Louise and Carol. Anna (Mrs. Elmer Wilheim) from Seattle, has three children, Peggy, Loretta and Gerald. Regarda (Mrs Victor Westfor) lives in Seattle. Marie (Mrs. Edmund Gabrysh) is at new Brighton, MInnesota. Conrad from Sandstone, Minnesota has nine children: Conrad, Allan, Francis, Timothy,Thomas, La Vern, Shirley, Veronica and Shari. Martin and his family moved to a farm in Overland Township in 1924. Here the other three children were born. Walter, who married Judith Wittkop has two children: Jeffrey and Gregory. Mrs. Dorothy Zins has three children: Scott, Randy and Cindy. They live in Minneapolis. A baby died in infancy During the winter of 1929 te Volk home burned to the ground. All their possession were lost, but fortunately the familyescaped unhurt. Marin, Anna and the nine children stayed withMr. and Mrs. A.J. Leonard, a neighbor, the rest of the winter. That spring a remodeled school house was moved to their farm. The Volks lived there until 1935 when they moved to a farm in Harding Township. In 1952 Mr. and Mrs. Volk, Stanley and Walter moved to a farm in Freshwater Township. Conrad and family stayed on the farm in Harding Township until the early 1960's when it was sold to the Kitsch family. In 1960 Martin, Ann and Stanley moved to a house in Devils Lake. In 1964 they bought a house in Minnewauken and moved there. Walter still farms in Freshwater Township. He served in the army in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946. Anna passed away in 1967 and Martin in 1972.
from ramsey county centennial book: Martin & Mary Kraft Volk Martin and Mary (Kraft) Volk were married November 4, 1935 at Rugby, North Dakota in Pierce County. They moved to the Southam, North Dakota area in the fall of 1942 Martin was born at Elsass, Russia May 10, 1910. His parents were Frank and Notaburga (Heinrich) Volk. Mary Kraft Volk was born near Barton, North Dakota in Pierce County on November 3, 1915. Her parents were August and Julia Frison Kraft. They farmed in the Southam area until 1961 then moved to their new home four miles east of Devils Lake for two years. They then moved to Fort Totten Cavalry Square where they were custodians for nine years until ill health forced Martin to retire and move back near Devils Lake. Mr. Volk passed away July 1, 1975. The Volks have four children: Rita (Mrs. Alfred Kraft) is a housewife and bookkeeper. Her husband is a self-employed truck driver. They have five children: Timothy is married to Kathy Birkeland. They have three girls: Jennifer, Jill and Sarah. he is a truck driverfor Knetter Cheese of Lakota. Daniel is also employed by Knetter Cheese and lives at home. Susan is a freshman at NDSU, Bottineau Branch. Scott is a senior at Central High School and is also employed at Ron's Standard part time. Alan is a tenth grader at Central. David Volk is married to the former Donna Sines. They live at Columbus, Ohio. They have two children: Kimberly and Jonathan. David is a senior field engineer for Racal Milgo (The electronics Group). Donna has a doll shop. She makesand sells her own dolls. Her shop is called Donna's Doll. Ramona (Mrs. Denver [Bud] Crowell) is a housewife and manages the Daklo Manor. Her hus band is employed by the city street department. They have two girls: Karlene Tura and Stephanie Kate. They reside in Devils Lake. Cathy (Mrs. Dennis Olson) is employed by Ramsey National Bank. Her husband is employedby Balzer Kurtz Painting. They live in Devils Lake.
