The following obituary notice of Hannah Smith was printed at the time of her death, February 9, 1830:âDied in Burlington, on the 9th inst., Mrs. Hannah Smith Pope, in the 88th year of her age. She was the relic of Gershom Pope who died in 1810. He was a soldier of the Revolution and with him she suffered all the privations, cares, and anxieties,incident to that interesting period of our country. They were among the first settlers of a new country exposed. She was a native of Sterling, Conn. Through a long life, in all her relative duties, she supported a respectable and amiable character. Herdescendants were twelve children, 129 grandchildren, and 115 great-grandchildren, in whole 256. She was truly a mother in Isreal.â
