Shirley Marie Schafer, 61, Bismarck, died Nov. 28, 2010, at a Mandan hospital. Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon Thursday, Dec. 2, at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charles Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a vigil/rosary will begin at 7 p.m. Shirley was born March 1, 1949, in Bismarck, the daughter of Lawrence and Agatha (Feist) Materi. She grew up and attended school in Hazelton and Bismarck. Shirley married Gary Schafer on July 6, 1984; and they have three children, one daughter, Melissa, and two sons, Gary Jr. and Kevin. Gary and Shirley are both Eucharistic ministers at Church of St. Mary, where Shirley has been a lifetime member. Shirley is survived by her husband of almost 27 years, Gary Sr., Bismarck; her children, Melissa Olheiser, New Salem, Gary Jr. (Angel) Schafer, North Carolina, and Kevin (Amanda) Schafer, Bismarck; three brothers, Francis Materi, Jim Materi and Tom (Debra) Materi; her sister, Darlene Materi; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Tom and Angelita Schafer; two special aunts, Clara and Julia Feist; and several nieces, nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her mother, Agatha Materi; and her stepfather, Lawrence Materi.
