Notes for Joseph REISS

(All information as told to Diane Korf By Helen Bones in June of 1994)-While
Elizabeth and Anton sent all the other sons out of the country when they
reached age the age of 14 or 15, so they wouldn't be forced to join the army,
Joe refused to leave. He married, had 2 children, and joined the Russian Army.
After WWI, (probably) during the (February Revolution ABT 1917), he went out
to seek food for the family and was found lying, starved to death in a ditch
by the side of the road. (outside St. Petersburg?)His wife later remarried a
man with the surname of Mueller, they had 2 children: a girl and a boy. During
WWII the Germans took him away, probably to a concentration camp and she never
saw him again. It is believed that after this happened she moved in with Joe's
mother, Elizabeth, who's second husband _____ Duescher had passed on. When
Elizabeth died the Russian government took possession of the property, a house
and 1 or 2 acres of land, and displaced the daughted-in-law, as she was not a
blood relative. The woman then moved to the English zone- Heidleburg. Her
children remained there or went back to Odessa OR she was sent back and the
kids are still there. She corresponded with Adam Reiss as he was the only one
of Balthaser's children who could read and write the German language, he may
still have the letters. -(end quote) It is very probable that this Joe is the
child of Elizabeth and her second husband.
