Life Legacy

Rose M. Schatz, 84, Velva, ND, died Saturday, June 7, 2014, at a Velva care
center.

Rose was born on July 4, 1929, in Ipswitch, SD, the daughter of Casper and
Elizabeth (Kuntz) Volk. She grew up in Blumenfeld, ND, and attended Smokey
Lake School through the 8th grade. As a young girl she helped out on many area
farm homes as a baby sitter and hired hand. In 1942, she moved to Karlsruhe
with her family. On September 30, 1947, she married Edmund Schatz. They lived
on his family farm until 1964, when they moved to Butte, ND. Rose and her
family operated Rose’s Café in butte for 7 years. In 1972, she went to work
at the Butte School as a cook where she worked until 1987.

Rose had many hobbies throughout the years. In earlier years Rose and Edmund
enjoyed square dancing. She had a ceramic shop for many years, made numerous
quilts for her children and grandchildren and enjoyed painting her wood
crafts. Edmund enjoyed helping Rose with all her hobbies. In August of 1997,
they moved to Velva. Rose joined the Velva Senior Citizens where she made many
new friends and enjoyed playing cards. She volunteered numerous hours at the
Souris Valley Care Center while Edmund and her mother were residents there.
Rose entered Souris Valley Care Center on January 8, 2008.

Rose enjoyed cooking and baking and was well known by many for all her good
treats. She shared many recipes with friends and family. Many of the kids she
cooked for in school came to see her long after they were out of school. They
often reminded her of the good times they had while they were in school and
the good food she made. She will be missed by all who knew her and her memory
will live on in our hearts forever.

Rose was a member of Saint Cecilia’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and
the Velva Senior Citizens. Rose was a former member of Holy Ghost Catholic
Church, Butte, Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, Balfour, 4-H Club Leader,
Butte, 3-B’s Square Dance Club, Balfour, Bergen and Butte and past PTA
