Notes for Joseph ZERR


Joseph Zerr, 88, rural Martin, ND, died on Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at his
farm home. Funeral services will be held at the St. Cecilia Catholic Church
of Harvey on Tuesday, February 20, at 9:30 a.m. Visitation will be held at the
Hertz Funeral Home of Harvey on Monday, February 19, from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00
p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery at Mandan.Joseph
was born on January 11, 1919, in Hillsdale Township, northwest of Harvey. Joe
was the son of Albert and Elizabeth (Wack) Zerr. Joe grew up and attended
school in Hillsdale Township. He worked on the family farm until being drafted
into the Army on May 6, 1941, at Fort Snelling, MN. He served four years, four
months and one day including 19 months in the Pacific in Hawaii, New Guinea
and the Philippines and was wounded in Luzon on the 28th day of March 1945.
Joe was honorably discharged on September 7, 1945, with the Purple Heart and a
Bronze Star. Joe was the last surviving member of the 20th Infantry 6th
Division Medical Attachment. Joe married Verna Kost on June 3, 1948, in
Harvey. They farmed in Hillsdale Township. Joe was a member of the St.
Cecilia Catholic Church and the Harvey Eagles Aerie, both of Harvey. Joe was
also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a 50-year member of
the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Joe served on the Hillsdale Township Board for
over 21 years and also served on the Harvey Rural Firemen’s Association.
Joe is survived by his wife, Verna, of Martin; sons and one daughter-in-law,
Glen of Martin, Kelley and Arlene of Story City, Iowa; daughter, Kathleen
Zerr, stationed in Berlin, Germany; son-in-law, John Laubacher, of Burlington,
ND; 5 grandchildren; and sister, Betty English, of Harvey.Joe was preceded
in death by his parents; daughter, Yvonne Laubacher; infant granddaughter;
brothers, Ed and Leo; and sisters, Mary Grund and Margaret Volk.
