HOFFART AND HOFFERT spellings mixed up in this family
Louie M. Hoffert was born in Rugby, North Dakota, on February 8, 1919 to Martin and Elizabeth (Thomas) Hoffert. He died at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby on May 6, 2007 at the age of 88. He grew up on a farm in Reno Valley Township, Pierce County, and went to school there. In 1937 he worked at Civilian Conservation Corps Camp No. 797 near Kenmare, North Dakota. He married Mildred Fern Morrill in Rugby on October 11, 1948. Mr. Hoffert farmed in the Baker and Knox area of Benson County until he and his wife moved to Rugby in 1984. His wife died on January 20, 1995. Louie moved to the Haaland Manor in 2002. He was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Rugby, having joined the Knights of Columbus in 1946 in Devils Lake, and was a Parish Board member at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Knox. He had been a Township Supervisor in Twin Lake Township. He was the first president of the Benson County Special Education Board, and was a member of the Fish Lake Wildlife Club. Louie was an active member of Little Flower Church in Rugby. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing cards, fishing, his children and grandchildren, and his many friends. He had a lifelong love of the land. He is survived by his children: Thomas Hoffert, Portland, Oregon; Rodger and his wife, Alice Hoffert, Robert and his wife, Kate Hoffert, Lou Ann Hoffert, all of Grand Forks; Jack Hoffert, Fargo; and Barb and her husband, Gabe Volk, Mandan. There are 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren surviving. Also surviving are his brothers, Leo Hoffert, Rugby, and Balzer Hoffert, Carson City, Nev.; and a sister, Ann Noce, Glendale, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brothers, Tony, Joe, Mike, Peter and Al; and sisters, Veronica Pfeifer and Bernice Sjostrom. Funeral services: Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby. Burial: St. Mary Cemetery, Knox.
