The Russian Consul General of Bethmann in Frankfurt handed out their passports to them on 9.9.1808 Another source has his name as Johann Georg Maier Following is research contributed by Annette Cook: After much checking and rechecking my documents, comparing them to various sources we already know, etc., I have come to the following conclusion: The (Franz) Georg Maier family from Zeutern who is documented in the Ortssippenbuch Zeutern by Franz Kessler cannot be the same person as the Johann Georg Maier family from Rounzenheim who is listed as family number 5 in Stumpp's 1816 census of Elsass (found on p. 631 in my library's copy of Stumpp). This Johann Georg Maier is also listed in Joseph Height's "Memories of the Black Sea Germans" ( p. 115) as coming from "Runzenheim". The Rountzenheim Mayers are as follows: (All documents are from the Catholic Church archives at the website: < http://archives.bas-rhin.fr > ) Joannes Georg Mayer, B. 12 April, 1770 to Hans Georg Mayer and Eva Ottmann [pp. 29r and 30v/ frames 53-54] Joannes Georg Mayer, M. Catharina Kuntz 19 Feb. 1803 [ pp. 3 v and r / frame 3/5] Their children: Bernhard, B. 19 Aug. 1804 (note: the given date is 1 Fructidor, year XI). P. 66/ frame 36/95] Maria Magdalena, B. 7 Dec. 1805 (16 Frimaire, Year XIV) Maria Catharina, B. 9 June, 1808 [P. 86/fr. 46/95) The 1811 census by Conrad Keller (found in the GRHS Heritage Review, V. 11, No. 3, Sept. 1981, Installment 9, P. 41) shows that Joannes Georg arrived in Elsass, Russia, on 5 Aug. 1809 from Runzenheim. He was 41 and with him were spouse "Katharina,"34, and children Bernhardt, 7, and Magdalena, 5. The 1814 Census of Elsass (available at GRHS) shows a Georg Maier family, number 59, P. 4: Georg Maier, household consists of 3 males and 2 females. The 1816 Census of Elsass, as found in Stumpp, P. 631 (my copy) shows Bernhard, 11, and Magdalena, 9. This is roughly consistent with Keller. However, in Stumpp's census we find that his wife, "Katharina" died in 1811, and he had remarried a woman named Barbara Ring, from the household of Anton Ring, number 26. From his first marriage (Cath. Kuntz) he had two daughters, Rosina and Katharina. If Georg's first wife, Katharina (Catharina. Kuntz) died in 1811, as found in Stumpp, it is entirely plausible that the death occurred after Keller's census of the same year. The two children from this marriage, Rosina and Katharina, who died in 1811 (Stumpp) might have been born between their arrival in Russia in 1809 and 1811. I found no birth records for them in Rountzenheim! Neither do they show up in the Zeutern Maier records. Also in this census of 1816 are two children from Georg's second marriage to Barbara Ring--Georg, 2, and Barbara, 1. These children were obviously born in Russia. The Zeutern Maiers, shown as family <2998> in the Ortssippenbuch, are as follows: Franz Georg, B. 11 Feb. 1776 Franz Georg marr. Regina Wittemann bef. 1800. She died 13 Feb. 1800, at the same time as their son, Georg, who was born that same day. Franz Georg marr. Catharina Holz 19 Feb. 1803. The Zeutern Ortssippenbuch shows 5 children born to Franz Georg and Catharina between 1802 and 1809. All died shortly after birth, except Franciscus Christoph, B. 17 Jan. 1802 (no death date shown). The deceased children were: Johann Georg, Cath. Barbara, Johannes Michael, and Franciscus Christoph (This seems odd and leads one to believe the first child with this name must also have died. ) Problem: The Ortssippenbuch indicates that Catharina Holz married a second time, 13 Aug. 1820, to Michael Steimel <2058>. Again, the Ortssippenbuch does not show a date of death for Franz Georg Maier, but if Cath. Holz remarried, he must have died! Joseph Hassler's, "Auswanderung aus Baden nach Russland und Polen im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert," (P. 88), indicates a Georg Maier from Zeutern going to "the Krim" in Russia with 3 persons in his party in 1809. I happen to have a photocopy of Stumpp's index of surnames, and on p. 364 there is listed a Georg Maier going to Neusatz/Kr, Revision list number 22. As I don't own a copy of this book it would be very helpful if someone would check this out. I have a copy of the 1852 Crimean Catholic Records from the Saratov archives (available at GRHS) and in Neusatz there is only one Mayer--Margaretha--who is 45 years old. (She would have been born ca. 1807.) Problem: Who is the Maier family show in Stumpp as number 5 in Elsass? It seems that they are from Rountzenheim, but there are troublesome loose ends. In my attempt to sort out these two families, I have come to realize that I need to completely rethink my own Maier ancestry! The mother of my great-grandfather, Ferdinand Mueller, was a Maier Eva Maier; his father was Friedrich Mueller. In the Elsass census of 1816, that same Anton Ring family (number 26 above) had a daughter, Katharina, who is shown to have married Friedrich Mueller of Selz.
