Notes for Mathias VOLK

                                         Matthias and Mary(Hoffert) Volk
   Matthias Volk was born in the Ukraine on June 14, 1899 and came to the
United States with his parents in 1902.  The family homesteaded in Smoky Lake
Township and when Matthias was in the sixth grade he had to leave school and
help his father with the farming.  On November 15, 1918 he was called to the
service but when he reported for duty he was sent home because the war was
over.  He returned to the family farm and worked for is father until he became
twenty-one and began farming on his own.
  On October 8, 1923 he married mary Hoffart (Haoffarth in German) at Crary,
North Dakota.  Her parents lived south of the Sveud farm near Towner. 
Matthias and Mary are the parents of three children; Wendelin, born July 6,
1924, married Mary Rombs from Pleasant Lake and now lives in Devils Lake where
he is manager of the Klickson Stores;  Ralph, born at Penn, North Dakota on
Jun 1, 1930, married Margaret Jundt, the daughter of Joe Jundt of Sacramento. 
Ralph served in the Marines and lives in Sacramento where he works for the
Weinstock Funiture and Flooring Dept.  Mary Marleen was born January 6, 1942
and married David Axtman from Devils Lake.  They live n Cottage
Grove,Minnesota where he is an engineer and works for theState of Minnesota. 
David has been on a kidneyh machine for seventeen years.
  Although Matthias never had the opportunityto finish school he is an avid
reader, especially of history, and has also taught himself to read German.  He
retired fro farming at the age of 65 and he and Mary noved to Towner where
they were members of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and the Senior Citizens of
Towner.  Mary passed away on January 6, 1984 and Matthias continues to reside
in Towner/
